Planned extension to China's FAST telescope to search for extraterrestrial life

China plans to build an extension on its FAST telescope to search an area of up to 100 light years from Earth, for planets with magnetic fields similar to ours. The plan is to lay an intensive network around the current FAST spherical surface with 5-meter caliber antenna and simplified receiving unit, to extend the effective baseline from the present 300 meters to dozens of kilometers. With this additional hardware it is hoped to support the search for extraterrestrial life.

China builds stronger 'eyes' to study sun

Researchers at the Ming'antu Observing Station based in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are building three new devices to monitor the sun - a decameter wave radio heliograph, an interplanetary scintillation telescope and an ultra-wideband solar radio dynamic spectrometer. The 130 million RMB ($18.8 million) new equipment will cover an area of about 143,333 m2 and is supposed to be finished in 2023 and go into use in 2025.

Longjiang 2 ends mission with crash landing on the Moon

Longjiang 2 micro sat, launched together with the data relay satellite Queqiao in May 2018 was guided for a crash landing on the Moon in a predetermined area on the far side of the Moon at 22:20 h (BJT) on 31 July. Longjiang 2 was operational for 437 days, exceeding its one-year designed lifespan.

American kids today dream of being vloggers, not astronauts - and Chinese?

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of NASA successful landing on the Moon, LEGO and The Harris Poll asked children in the US, UK and in China what their aspirations for the future are. While in the U.S. and the UK 11% said they would like to become an astronaut, in China 56% of the children found this an interesting occupation.
