China provides satellite data to assist India in flood relief

China has provided satellite data to assist India with its recent flood relief efforts, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on Wednesday.
The CNSA launched the satellite emergency response plan early last Thursday, following the Indian Space Research Organization's (ISRO) request for international disaster relief support last Wednesday night, under the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters, said the Chinese space agency.
The China Center for Resources Satellite Data and Application (CRESDA) scheduled three Chinese earth observation satellites, namely Gaofen-1, Gaofen-2 and Gaofen-3, to capture images of flood-stricken regions in India last Friday, last Saturday and on Wednesday, the CNSA said in a press release.

CASC tested controlled landing procedures for Long March rocket stage

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) said that the Long March 2C which launched the new triplet of Yaogan 30 remote sensing satellites on 26 July was equipped with steerable grid fins to control the direction of the fall of the used rocket stage and its attitude. The success of the test is of great significance for improving China's inland rocket landing safety, minimizing the inconvenience to the local people, as well as promoting the follow-up development of carrier rockets' controllable recovery, soft landing and reuse, according to He Wei, an official with the CASC.

Airbus brings a SMILE to ESA ... and to China

Airbus has been selected by the European Space Agency to build the European component of the SMILE satellite (Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer). SMILE will be the first joint satellite mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), following on from the success of the Double Star / Tan Ce mission which flew between 2003 and 2008.

Researcher working on Beidou system seeks to inspire talent

"The most valuable part of innovation is to make something out of nothing," said Yu Wenxian, who leads a team at the university conducting research for the Beidou Navigation Satellite System. "Working in the technology field, I have always believed that all the problems can be solved through innovation. I enjoy the process of discovering a problem and focusing on it." Yu, 54, established the nation's first Beidou industrial park, China Beidou Industrial Technology Innovation West Hongqiao Base, as well as the Shanghai Beidou Research Institute in 2013, both of which look to promote research and industrialization of the Beidou system.
