Many new companies have entered the commercial aerospace industry in China, supported by the government. Most of the CEOs come from government aerospace agencies or national scientific institutions. These companies still have a long way to go to catch up with Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Between 10-12 October, scientists from China’s space programme and the European Space Agency (ESA) conducted a review of China-ESA joint mission SMILE. During the review, they confirmed that the SMILE spacecraft will be launched in 2021 on Arianespace’s upcoming Vega-C rocket, after choosing between the Soyuz, Ariane 6, and Vega-C.

Earlier this year, Chinese media outlets announced that researchers from the National Space Science Center in Beijing had come up with a plan to capture an asteroid and steer it back to the Earth’s surface. The plan was submitted as part of a contest designed to promote interest in the space sciences and engineering, and was entered into the finals with another 59 entrants. So, is the China plan realistic? Or is it a horrific catastrophe waiting to happen?

When German scientists were conducting micro-gravity experiments on China's recoverable satellite in the 1980s, Chinese space engineer Tang Bochang was busy solving technical problems, while carefully keeping Chinese secrets. Tang joined the China Academy of Space Technology in 1970, the same year China launched its first satellite. He has participated in the development of returnable satellites, with China's first successful launch in 1975. Soon after, China started to open its space missions to the outside world in the wake of its reform and opening up.
