China issues commemorative stamps to mark launch of Tianwen 1 planetary probe

China has issued a set of stamps to commemorate the successful launch of the country's first Mars Probe Tianwen 1. The commemorative stamp release ceremony was held on 26 September at the Wenchang Space Science Centre, in South China's Hainan Province, where Tianwen 1 was launched into space. There is a planned issuance of 7.8 million sets of the Tianwen 1 commemorative stamp, each with a face value of 1.2 yuan ($0.18).

Beidou set to curb human-elephant conflicts

China's Beidou Navigation Satellite System has many applications. Soon, the space-based system will be applied to a new user - Asian elephants living in the country's southwestern province of Yunnan. In October, the animals will start wearing collars linked to Beidou services. The move, a joint effort by e-commerce giant Alibaba and Beijing-based private satellite producer Commsat, is intended to better protect the big mammals and their human neighbors, said Xie Tao, founder and CEO of Commsat.

High-resolution imaging with improved quality from Gaofen data released

The first batch of pictures taken by China's best optical Earth-observation satellite for civil use was published on 29 September, becoming the clearest photos ever created by a Chinese civilian satellite. More than 20 sub-meter-resolution images taken by the High-Resolution Multi-Mode Imaging Satellite, the latest in China's Gaofen high-resolution Earth-observation satellite fleet, were made public by the China National Space Administration at a ceremony in Beijing, depicting places in the capital, Gansu province's Lanzhou and Jiayuguan, and the Gezhouba Dam on the Yangtze River.

Tianwen 1 takes selfies en route to Mars

The China National Space Administration released mid-flight images of Mars probe Tianwen 1 on 1 October. It is the first time that Tianwen 1 took selfies. The images were captured by a separating measurement sensor installed on the outer wall of Tianwen 1. With commands from ground control on Earth, the sensor separated from Tianwen 1 and took one picture every second with its two wide-angle lenses. The images were sent to Tianwen 1 via Wi-Fi and then dispatched to Earth. As of midnight on 30 September, Tianwen 1 has flown about 188 million km and is currently 24.10 million km away from Earth. All probe systems are in good condition.
