Trudeau under pressure to reject China bid for satellite firm

Pressure ratcheted up on 13 June on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government to effectively deny a Chinese firm's purchase of Canadian satellite communications company Norsat, over national security concerns. Its purchase by Hytera Communications was approved earlier this month, after a routine security analysis.

Spacecraft undocking a success

China's Tianzhou 1 cargo spacecraft has begun a three-month independent flight after detaching from the Tiangong II space laboratory on 21 June morning, according to the China Manned Space Agency. The un-docking sequence started at 9:17 am and lasted about 30 minutes. Tianzhou 1 now operates in an orbit nearly 390 kilometers above the ground, the agency said in a news release on 21 June.

China to launch Long March-5 Y2 early next month

China has set the window to launch its Long March-5 Y2 carrier rocket between July 2 and 5, according to the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. Carrying Shijian-18 communication satellite, the rocket was vertically transferred to the launch area at Wenchang Space Launch Center in south China's Hainan Province on 26 June.

China's 2nd heavy-lift carrier rocket blasts off

China launched the Long March-5 Y2, the country's second heavy-lift carrier rocket, from Wenchang Space Launch Center in southern province of Hainan in the evening of 2 July. The rocket, carrying the Shijian-18 satellite, blasted off at 7:23 p.m. Beijing time, trailing a vast column of flame.
The launch is the last test for the Long March-5 series before its mission to send the Chang'e-5 lunar probe into space in the latter half of this year, which will return with samples.
