Harvest from heavenly breeding

12 August 2022
Onboard the SZ-14 space craft, seeds of rice, soybeans, vegetables, yeast, and a variety of bacterial species that are essential in food preservation have been transported to the Space Station and will return with the crew later this year. The samples were selected by the Beijing Capital Agribusiness & Foods Group. Scientists will examine and evaluate the seed mutations and select those with favourable characteristics such as greater yields, shorter growth periods, and better resistance to diseases. Unlike genetically modified food transferring genes from other species, space-bred seeds and strains undergo a mutation of their own genes only.

How to reduce noise in the Wentian module?

14 August 2022
To provide a comfortable living environment for the taikonauts on board the Station, the research team on the ground has put in quite an effort to turn it down. The refrigerator is one of the noisy equipment inside the Wentian module because it has as many integrated functions as possible. The researchers had to design a new pump and noise-reduction materials. As the equipment are different in aspects, including the size, location and the cause of the noise, the research team had to use diverse methods to reduce the noise, such as covering them with rubber or placing them inside soundproof boxes. As a result, the noise in the work area in the Wentian module is maintained at under 60 decibels. It is 50 decibels in the sleeping area, which offers taikonauts a quiet environment to rest as they continue their work in space.
