Satellite images show unique desert lakes

The satellite Jilin-1 recently sent back a series of images from space showing of lakes in various Chinese deserts. The satellite family, developed by Changchun-based Changguang Satellite Technology Co, is China‘s first domestic remote-sensing satellite constellation for commercial purposes. It captures super high-definition images and helps with forest fire warnings, desertification, offshore rescue, ocean protection and other remote-sensing information services.

China begins construction of powerful radar system for deep-space observation

In a move to play increasingly role in global efforts to safeguard Planet Earth, China has recently begun constructing a new high-definition deep-space active observation facility in the country's Southwest Chongqing municipality, with goals including boosting its defense capability against near-Earth asteroid as well as sensing capability for the Earth-Moon system.

Finding a name for ASO-S

From 11 to 24 July, a call for ideas was open for finding a name for NSSC's first solar probe, the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S). The solar explorer is scheduled for launch in October. The name is supposed to reflects ASO-S' function while also suggesting China's spirit of scientific exploration and cultural self-confidence. The satellite, which is designed to have a 4-year lifespan, will conduct observations on the solar magnetic field, solar flares and coronal mass ejections, to support the forecasting of catastrophic space weather. It will deploy 3 payloads, including a Full-disk Vector MagnetoGraph, a Hard X-ray Imager and a Lyman-alpha Solar Telescope. After entering into orbit, the satellite will generate about 500GB of data each day, all of which will be made available to global users around the world.

International space technology agreement for natural World Heritage conservation

Under the auspices of UNESCO, the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage signed a memorandum of understanding online on Thursday with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, for natural World Heritage conservation with science and technologies from China. Together, they will improve geospatial and Earth observation capacities by assessing radar, plane, and satellite imagery provided by Chinese scientists to address problems as more than 1,000 world's natural and cultural heritages in about 170 countries are threatened by natural disasters, climate change, and human activities.
