Ministry maps out plans for sci-tech for 2022

The Ministry of Science and Technology held a virtual work meeting on 6 January. Wang Zhigang, the minister of science and technology reflected on the recent science and technology achievements among them are the nation's first rover on Mars and the launch of its first sun observation satellite Xihe. He also said that China will carry out institutional reforms to bolster its research capability in strategic fields, including restructuring its State Key Laboratories. Top Chinese science and technology leaders, as well as small and medium-sized companies, will receive more support to play a bigger role in making innovations. Taking these steps will improve the overall efficiency of China's science and technology sector

Yutu 2 reached 1,000 m milestone

As of midnight 6 January, Yutu 2 has traveled 1,003.9 m on the far side of the Moon. YT-2 closed in on the cubic object photographed on 36th lunar day in November 2020. During the 38th lunar day, the rover's panoramic camera was commanded to take color photos from 10 m distance. After initial interpretation, the science team assumes that the object is a lunar rock. YT-2 will continue with close-up inspection of the rock and the impact crater behind the object during the next lunar day.

Shenzhou 13 crew trains manual docking in space

In the very early morning of 8 January, the SZ-13 crew conducted a manual rendezvous and docking test with the TZ-2 cargo craft. The procedure was teleoperated by the crew from inside the Tianhe core module with spport by mission control. In a 1st step, the TZ-2 craft was commanded to undock from its docking port and move to a pre-planned parking position. After a short stay, TZ-2 moved back towards the Tianhe module and re-docked. The process took about 2 h and was completed at 7:55 BJT.

Results of spectral analysis of Chang'e 5 lander data published

On 8 January, a science team led by Honglei Lin from the Key Laboratory of Earth and Planetary Physics, Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing, published their finding from the analysis of in-situ data of the Chang'e 5 lander in the science journal Science Advances. The scientists were looking for the signature of water in the reflectance spectra from the lunar regolith and a specific rock at the Chang’e 5 landing site.
