First SDGSAT-1 images released

On 20 December he first batch of 11 satellite images of cities and regions taken by the SDGSAT-1 satellite were released. SDGSAT-1 is equipped with three different imagers: thermal infrared, glimmer and multi-spectral. The remote sensing pictures show the Yangtze River Delta in the eastern part of China, Lake Namtso in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, Beijing, Shanghai, Paris, etc.
At present, SDGSAT-1 is under in-orbit test.

Two new Shiyan satellites launched

23 December 2021
A Long March-7A rocket launched on 23 December at 18:12 BJT from the Wenchang Space Launch Site and carried Shiyan-12 01 and Shiyan-12 02 into space. Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the pair of satellites will do space environment surveys and other related technology tests, the state-owned company said in a statement. The exact purpose of the satellites was not reported.

Tianwen 1 is China’s ‘first step’ in planetary exploration

After Zhang Rongqiao, Chief Designer of the Tianwen 1 mission, was listed in Nature’s Top 10 ranking of people who helped to shape science in 2021, the science journal spoke to him via e-mail. Zhang discusses his thoughts on the mission so far, the progress of the Zhurong rover and what it means for China’s space-research endeavours.

In another interview with Chinese language Science and Technology Daily, Zhang Rongqiao also reflected on the difficulties when deciding for the 3-in-1 mission concept versus following the 3-step approach in the lunar exploration programme. He also said that progress in the development of the Mars sample return mission is a high priority.
