Zhurong: prepare for landing!

China’s 1st Mars exploration mission, Tianwen 1, has functioned normally since its launch on 23 July 2020. On 10 February 2021, Tianwen 1 entered the Martian orbit for scientific exploration and a huge amount of scientific data became available since then. With the evaluation of the flight status, Tianwen-1 probe is scheduled to perform the landing sequence, heading for Utopia Planitia, at the proper time slot starting from the early morning 15 May until 19 May, Beijing time.

Zhurong sends back signal: landing successful

Tianwen 1 with Zhurong rover landed on Mars at 07:18 BJT (14 May/23:18 GMT). The lander-rover combination is conducting diagnostic tests and environmental imaging and collecting data for the next 7-8 days of before the Zhurong rover will roll down a ramp for in-situ surface exploration.

The lander will conduct ground detection at a fixed location, and Zhurong will rove the planet to explore multiple sites during its lifespan of at least 90 Martian days, or 92 days on Earth. Zhang Rongqiao, Chief Designer of China's Mars Exploration Mission, said the rover's 3-month lifespan is "a result of comprehensive consideration." He said the rover will collect all the data they need in the first 3 months, with all the payloads on and convey the data to Earth via the orbiter for relay transmission.

Tianzhou 2 cargo spacecraft is getting readied for launch

On 16 May, the Tianzhou 2 cargo spacecraft and the CZ-7 carrier rocket have been transported to the launching area of the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island. The facilities and equipment at the launch site are in good condition, while various pre-launch function checks and joint tests will be carried out as planned.
