CZ-5 about to return to flight in July - CZ-5B under development

The plan for the launch of the 3rd Long March 5 rocket is fixed: Yang Baohua, vice president of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) said at a press conference of CASC that July should see the return to flight. He explained once more the cause of the failure to the media. Also, a test version of the Long March-5B carrier rocket, which will serve China's manned space exploration mission, is under development, and the research and development of the core module of the CSS are going according to schedule, said Shang Zhi, Director of the Department of Space under CASC.

China is going to send more than 50 spacecraft into space via over 30 launches this year, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation's (CASC) press conference on 29 January. Also, the mission profile for the lunar sample return mission Chang'e 5 was explained.

Chang'e 4 lander and Yutu rover are awake again

The rover and the lander of the Chang'e 4 probe have been awakened by sunlight after a staying in "sleep mode" during the first lunar night, China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced on 31 January. The key instruments started operating automatically. The lander ended the dormant state on 30 January at 20:39 h, and the rover, Yutu 2 (Jade Rabbit-2), awoke at about 20:00 h on 29 January. Currently, the rover is located about 18 meters northwest of the lander.

Chang'e 4 temperature readings for the far side of the Moon say: - 190ºC

"According to the measurements of Chang'e 4, the temperature of the shallow layer of the lunar soil on the far side of the Moon is lower than the data obtained by the U.S. Apollo mission on the near side of the moon," said Zhang He, Executive Director of the Chang'e 4 probe project, from the China Academy of Space Technology.

Chinese study on quantum communication wins Newcomb Cleveland Prize

The research paper on quantum communication involving the Quantum Experiments at Space Scale (QUESS) satellite will receive the 2018 Newcomb Cleveland Prize as it laid the groundwork for ultra-secure communication networks of the future. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) announced on 31 January that a team of 34 Chinese physicists led by Pan Jianwei with the University of Science and Technology of China had won the award that will be delivered on 14 February. The Newcomb Cleveland Prize, AAAS' oldest award, has honored the most impactful research paper published in the journal Science since 1923.
