China's efforts to develop meteorological satellites have made major strides over the past 50 years, but challenges remain, satellite experts have said. Dong Yaohai, Chief Designer of the Fengyun 4 satellites, said that despite high-sophisticated instruments on the satellites, the accuracy of the satellites' detectors needs to be improved. "More accurate detectors can provide more accurate weather forecasts," he said. "We still lag behind the global average level. And this is the major task that we need to tackle."

A new artificial heart design powered by Chinese rocket technology is being tried on patients with weak hearts. The trials were launched on 13 September by clinicians at the TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital in north China's Tianjin Municipality. Called HeartCon, the artificial heart weighs only 180 grams and is smaller than the size of a fist. It is an outcome of long-term cooperation between the hospital and the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology - CALT.

China has sent its Gaofen-13 satellite into orbit, kicking off a spree of space missions that will bring a dozen major launches in the next few months. These satellites observe and take photos of the Earth, including some infrared ray images, which can be used for many civilian purposes, including monitoring pollution and environment, estimating agricultural yields, forecasting weather and disasters, and detecting minerals. There are also military applications for the satellites. Last month, China released a video captured by the Jilin-1 Gaofen-3 satellite, in which it continuously tracked the flight of a fighter jet, thought to be an F-22, the most advanced American stealth fighter.

During the Beidou Summit Forum on 14 October, the version 2.0 Beidou high-accuracy positioning service platform was released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). With a 1.2 meter positioning accuracy, the platform enables lane-level vehicle positioning on mobile phones. Users can use the service by updating the software and firmware of their mobile phones, without having to install additional hardware.
