Have you ever thought it would be possible to buy a 40-million-yuan or 5.6-million-U.S.-dollar commercial rocket in an e-commerce platform? Well, that happened on April 1. China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) joined Taobao, China's largest e-commerce platform, and successfully sold out its Kuaizhou-1A or KZ-1A carrier rocket. At 20:45 Wednesday night, Taobao live streamer Viya started to sell the KZ-1 rocket launch service for about 40 million yuan. Just around five minutes later, over 800 people have placed 500,000 yuan down payment.

The latter half of the 2010s saw a plethora of mostly privately-funded, commercially-oriented launch companies emerge from China. The speed of development and number of companies can be exemplified by the fact that they fall rather neatly into two “generations”, namely the first generation of 4-5 companies mostly founded in 2014-2015, and the second generation of up to 10 companies founded mostly since 2018.

China's Aperture Spherical Telescope, known as FAST, has identified 114 new pulsars since its trial operation began in September 2016, according to the FAST Operation and Development Center of the National Astronomical Observatories of China. FAST has carried out nearly 1,000 hours of observation from Jan 1 to March 23, and operated normally during the novel coronavirus epidemic.

China will launch the first two communications satellites for its space-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) project in mid to late April, with one satellite named after its birthplace Wuhan, according to the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). The satellite will become part of the planned 156 satellite Xingyun constellation, orbiting Earth at around 1,000 km height. Xingyun could be completed by the end of 2025.
The rocket to send the satellites, Kuaizhou-1A, was developed by the Wuhan-based Sanjiang Group under the CASIC. Despite its proximity to the epicenter of the novel coronavirus epidemic, the company staff worked hard to ensure the success of the mission.
