China, Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa will further strengthen their cooperation in the space industry as the 5 countries established a committee on 25 May dedicated to boosting joint efforts in this field. The BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation will open a new chapter on BRICS strategic cooperation in the remote sensing satellite observation and data sharing fields. The establishment of the commission will guide the cooperation on BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation to better serve the socioeconomic development of the BRICS countries, Zhang Kejian, head of the CNSA, said at the committee's first video meeting. Zhang said that the new joint committee will enable BRICS space agencies to work closer together when it comes to environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, and tackling climate change with efficient data sharing and utilisation. At the meeting, space agencies from the 5 member countries reported on their activities and reviewed and adopted documents on the joint committee's terms of reference, the technical specifications for data exchange, and the implementation procedures for joint observation.
