China will invest more than one billion yuan (about 157 million U.S. dollars) to build a high altitude observatory in the southwest to monitor cosmic rays, local authorities said on 11 September. The observatory, the second of its kind in China, will be built in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze in southwest China's Sichuan Province, said Cao Zhen, a research fellow with the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) under Chinese Academy of Sciences.
